sudo apt-get install mt-daapd
mt-daapd, now known as Firefly Media Server, is a DAAP (Digital Audio Access Protocol) server that works with most POSIX-compatible operating systems. It allows you to share your music collection over the local network using the DAAP protocol also used by Apple's iTunes.
Uses sqlite3 database file which can be edited using sqlite3. The database is located in /var/cache/mt-daapd
The server shows up over the local network in iTunes or rhythmbox as a shared library.
iTunes also shows playlists but rhythmbox doesn't
It doesn't seem to work over the Internet; at least I haven't figured out how yet.
Music can be accessed over the internet using the url http://hostname:3689/databases/1/items/nnnn.wav where nnnn is the number of the music piece obtainable by running sqlite3
