MPD (Music Player Daemon) is an audio player that has a server-client architecture. MPD runs in the background as a daemon, manages playlists and a music database, and uses very few resources. In order to interface with it, you need a separate client.

The only thing server-client about this app is that the daemon can be "controlled" by a client app, such as gmpc. You cannot play your music on any other computer. Bottom line: It is a *player* not a *music server*, and not a very good one either. For example it can't read flac metadata. It appears to get title and artist from the file name and directory names but doesn't even attempt to read comments. Both iTunes (running remotely) and rhythm box (running locally) report genre so it's not like the tag is in error.
